they were really sweet and quiet. Eucalyptus parrots are extremely expensive but great pets once you bond with them !

Here are some facts about them ! ->

No, not ‘eclectic’, Eclectus – the Eclectus Parrot, an extremely colorful, easily tamed, and social bird. These birds are fun! Native to Australia, New Guinea, and the islands of eastern Indonesia, they’re large parrots growing up to 15 inches in length.

Female Eclectus ParrotThere are actually nine subspecies of Eclectus parrots each very similar in appearance varying in the size of their heads, brightness of their feathers, and the color of their heads. Regardless, they’re all absolutely gorgeous.

If you come across an Eclectus Parrot, you cannot help but want to touch them. Their feathers are almost like hair and are tightly interlocked to give them a silky coat that begs to be petted. Their coloring is more brilliant than the most vibrant rainbow.

The males are a vibrant green with a horn colored beak, a cluster of blue on their wings and a bright red under wing. Yep, rainbow! The females are red with brilliant blue underbellies and black beaks. They are among the few birds whose gender is so easily identified; most birds are difficult to sex.

Due to the variety of subspecies, hybrid breeding is common and is strongly frowned upon. The majority of bird lovers, breeders, and environmentalists believe that it is important to keep the gene pool of these amazing birds pure.

Behind the scenes of CMA ! part 1

On July 10, 2014  Our Mom took us to Florida…

to visit the Clear water Marine Aquarium, Where Winter the dolphin that can  lives !

On this tour we saw where they will be filming part of Dolphin Tale 2, their hospital, their sick turtles, and we “rehabilitated” a fake sick turtle named Peter.

On July 4, 2014 a dolphin calf was rescued… she was weak and malnourished click here to see her incredible  rescue !

The CMA is thinking about naming her * Liberty* (the asterisks are fire works ) 😉 CMA’s stranding team is nourishing her back to health.

However any one who goes into Liberty’s habitat, can’t come back to the aquarium for 3 whole days ! because they don’t want to risk getting the other dolphins sick.

The CMA had a-lot of sick turtles (and when I say a-lot I mean A-LOT!) most of the sick turtles were Green sea Turtles ,

This is a sad story about green sea turtles.

Green sea turtles all over the world are dying from a disease. The name of the disease has many letters in it. It is very hard to say. The turtle disease is fibropapilloma (FY bro PAP il LO ma) tumors.

Fibropapillomas are very serious. Turtles can die from them. When turtles have the disease they get ugly white lumps. These lumps are the tumors. Tumors grow on the soft body parts of turtles. This is what they look like.

Have you ever been to the CMA ? If you have not been to the Clear water Marine Aquarium, you have got to go it is the coolest place on EARTH !

they have an amazing gift shop and so many, sea creatures.

When I grow up I want to be part of their SUPERB stranding team, on the fourth of July 2014 a female Baby dolphin was rescued, they are thinking about naming her Liberty (CUTE NAME!)  you can read more about her in my next post Behind the scenes at CMA !

How much do you know about dolphins ?

Did you know dolphins can hold their breath up to 7 minuets ?

Atlantic bottle nose dolphins are found in saltwater rivers, bays, estuaries, marshes and in the open ocean.

Are dolphins camouflaged?

Yes, counter shading is a type of camouflage found in many marine species. By having a dark back and a light belly, a bottlenose dolphin will blend into the sunlit surface waters as well as the dark ocean depths.

How large is an Atlantic bottle nose dolphin?

On average, an Atlantic bottle nose dolphin will be 8.5 feet long and 400-500 pounds.

Does a dolphin have hair?

Yes, all mammals have hair at some point in their lives and a dolphin is no exception. A baby dolphin (calf) is born with whiskers on its upper jaw (rostrum) which fall out soon after birth.

How does a dolphin stay warm in the cold water?

Very dense body fat called blubber serves as insulation for the dolphin against the cold. Blubber also provides energy for the dolphin when food availability is low and its streamlining effect on the dolphin’s body aides with hydrodynamics.

How many teeth does a dolphin have?

An Atlantic bottlenose dolphin has 80 – 100 cone-shaped teeth which they use for trapping their prey. Dolphins swallow their food whole without chewing it.

What is echolocation?

Echolocation is a dolphin’s ability to receive information by sending sound waves into their environment and then analyzing the returning echoes after they have bounced off of objects in the water.

How fast does an Atlantic bottlenose dolphin swim?

On average, an Atlantic bottlenose dolphin will swim 5 – 6 feet/second and may even reach top speeds of over 25 feet/second.

How long can an Atlantic bottlenose dolphin hold its breath?

On average, an Atlantic bottlenose dolphin can hold its breath for 5 – 7 minutes.

How does a dolphin sleep?

Because they are air-breathing mammals living in the water, dolphins cannot sleep the way that you and I can. Dolphins must remain conscious at all times and for most animals, sleep is an unconscious behavior. For this reason, dolphins will rest by allowing half of their brain at a time to go into a sleep state while the other half maintains awareness of the environment and breathing needs.

How long is an Atlantic bottlenose dolphin pregnant for?

12 months.

Does a mother dolphin nurse her young?

Yes, a mother dolphin provides very rich milk for her calf for at least one year and usually longer. A calf has a specially adapted tongue allowing it to form a straw shape for ingesting the milk without ingesting any salt water!

What is an Atlantic bottlenose dolphin’s lifespan?

In marine mammal facilities accredited by the Alliance of Marine Mammal Parks and Aquariums, such as Dolphin Connection, the average lifespan is over 25 years. In the wild the average lifespan is roughly half of that.

Do dolphins have any predators?

Yes. Sharks and killer whales are natural predators of dolphins.

What is the conservation status of the Atlantic bottlenose dolphin?

The species as a whole is not endangered, threatened or vulnerable although localized populations may be. The International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) lists the bottlenose dolphin as a species of least concern, however threats to the animals – and their habitat – are increasing.

How can I help dolphins?

Being respectful of dolphins is the best way to help them. This is especially important when sharing their habitat as a swimmer, boater or fisherman. You can learn more about this here. Participating in beach clean-ups and recycling your fishing line are other great ways you can help.

How would you feel if some “stranger” just came and strolled into your house ? scared, confused, and well uncomfortable,

so we became friend with Hope by using “primary reinforcement” in other words fish !

Easy Breezy Morning

Good morning, crafty peeps!

Waiting for the rest of the household to wake up, I’m grabbing a minute to jot y’all a note.  I just baked homemade scones for breakfast from scratch.  They are in the oven, and they smell simply scrumptious.  I know the family will soon drift into the kitchen, drawn by the delicious, fresh scones.  (I use the recipe here, but I leave out the cream cheese, to make it low-fat.)

scones

I will babysit the younger ones today, and I wanted to try something new.  Ta da!  Today I will host Camp Carebear (another one of my nicknames). Oh!  Here are the scones,  and the baby is awake, so I have to go.  Nice chit-chatting  with y’all!

A little bit of this & that

I am sitting here watching Dolphin Tale for the billionth time.   I love this movie so much.

My mom bought us a new camera for the Florida trip.  It is a waterproof camera called a Fujifilm,

It takes great pictures, above and underwater – I love it!

:)

Trying out the Fujiflim

This Tuesday, I started my first day of summer dance class.  We learned a really pretty contemporary piece,  but I am going to try a harder class on Thursday.  K-bub and Cherry Bess have Mini Olympics this Saturday, so we will watch them performing their gymnastics routines.  I am looking forward to it!  This year’s Mini-Olympics theme is a beach party.

Winter in summer

Hi y’all,

I am Crafty Caro and I am SEW excited to start this blog and chit-chat with y’all. I have some BIG news: My mom is taking me and two of my younger siblings to Florida in July to go see Winter the dolphin!!!  Winter lost her tail in a crab trap when she was a baby and was rescued by the Clearwater Marine Aquarium.  I am so excited about going to see Winter!  Visiting Winter has been a dream of mind since I watched Dolphin Tale about two years ago.  While visiting CMA, I can see all the dolphins, sea turtles and other wildlife.  Bubba and I will serve as junior trainers for the day, helping prepare food and care for the animals.  One day, we even get to swim with the dolphins.  If you would like to learn more about Winter the dolphin and Clearwater Marine Aquarium, go to www.seewinter.com   Welcome to Blog-a-Latte!
